Balance & Biomechanics
Collaborations with coach Stephanie Dewes
We highly recommend barns complete both workshops in their respective order. We believe time spent both in and out of the saddle is crucial to the horse/human relationship. These workshops provide riders with the foundation and understanding needed to strengthen their connection with their equine partner and support their health and success.
Workshop 1: Horse & Human Body Awareness
Length: 3 hours
Cost: $450.00
Deposit: $100.00 nonrefundable
Mileage: $1.25/km for over 50km from Sherwood Park
Recommended registration fee: $75.00 - $90.00/person
This workshop is completed off the horse. Space will be needed for participants to roll out yoga mats on solid footing and for the second portion of the workshop, a provided horse and space for groundwork will be required.
This workshop includes a discussion on mindfulness for the equestrian and a 60 minute Yoga for Equestrians class led by Desiree. Riders will explore mind/body connection, body awareness and strength and stretching exercises that are beneficial to daily life and time spent in the saddle.
Following yoga, Stephanie provides a demonstration on a provided horse, discussing the importance of body exercises for horses. The lecture includes reviewing what tension and relaxation looks like in the horse and tools and exercises to provide your horse with support to be happy, healthy and successful.
Workshop 2: Balance & Biomechanics
Length: 4 hours
Cost: $600.00
Deposit: $100.00 nonrefundable
Mileage: $1.25/km for over 50km from Sherwood Park
Recommended registration fee: $85 - $100.00/person
This workshop includes time in and out of the saddle. Space will be required for the introductory discussion. As well, arena space will be required and participants will need a horse to ride (owned, leased or lesson horses are welcome).
This workshop begins with an introductory discussion on rider body analysis, exploring body awareness and alignment out of the saddle and the impacts in the saddle. Group discussion is involved in assessing the participants. Following will be a 2 hr clinic in the saddle. This time will begin with horse and rider warm up. Stephanie will relate the imbalance/compensation patterns that can be found in riders to the movement of the horse - describing how the horse will be affected for both short and long term riding. From wrong leads to chronic lameness, Stephanie will cover the equine impacts of body awareness.
The following will be explored for both horse AND rider:
• creating body awareness
• body analysis – postural and habitual patterns
• what does proper balance look like?
• body control exercises
• stretching exercises
